Leonardo DaVinci Sketches

Leonard DaVinci could very well be the greatest painter that ever lived but he was so much more than just a painter.  He was also a sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, geologist, cartographer, botonist and writer and probably the archetype of the term Renaissance Man.

It is hard to image one human being, one man, being all of those things, but he was.  He quite possibly could be the most diversely talented person to have ever lived.  His painting of the Mona Lisa is his most famous and The Last Supper is the most reproduced religious painting of all time.

DaVinci is also revered as a technological genius and the notebooks he left behind contained drawings of a helicopter, tank, concentrated solar power, and a calculator among others.  Few of his designs were even feasible during his lifetime but some of them were put into use as the newest in technology such as the automated bobbin winder and the machine that tested the strength of wire.  DaVinci also made important discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, optics and hydrodynamics.

Leonardo DaVinci blessed this planet with his presence from 1452 until 1519.

I hope you enjoy these sketches by Leonardo DaVinci

Free Vintage Clip Art - Seattle's Space Needle

Seattle's Space Needle

Built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair the Space Needle is 605 feet tall and weighs 9,550 tons.  It was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River when it was built.  It was built to withstand winds up to 200 miles per hour and a magnitude 9.1 earthquake and has 25 lightning rods on top to prevent lightning damage.

The Space Needle was built on a 120 x 120 foot piece of land that was purchased for $75k.  The Needle welcomed its 45 millionth visitor on May 19, 2007.  That visitor received a trip for two to Paris.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Independence Day Emblem

During the American Revolution the original Thirteen Colonies voted to legally separate from Great Britain on July 2nd, 1776 and the Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4th, 1776.

In a stunning coincidence the only two original signers of the Declaration of Independence that went on to serve as President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, died on the same day, July 4th, 1826.   Two other presidents, James Monroe and Calvin Coolidge, also died on July 4th.

Below is a wonderful, ornate patriotic emblem

Free Vintage Clip Art - The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge over the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean.  Completed in 1937 it was the world's longest suspension bridge and remains the second longest suspension bridge in the United States and was declared one of the modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Many experts didn't think a 6700 foot long bridge could be built across the bay, which is 500 feet deep at its center.  San Francisco Bay has always been known for its strong, swirling currents and strong winds and the experts at the time vicous winds and blinding fogs would prevent not only construction but operation of the bridge as well.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Notre Dame Cathedral

Vintage Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris

Notre Dame de Paris means Our Lady of Paris.  This Gothic Catholic cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architectural in all of Europe.  Construction began in 1163 and was completed in 1345.  During the French Revolution in the 1790's much of the cathedral was destroyed.  Extensive restoration returned the cathedral to its original Gothic state.

Historic events held inside the Notre Dame Cathedral:

4-28-1558 Mary, Queen of Scots was married there
12-2-1804 Napolean's coronation

Free Vintage Clip Art - Spectacular Ornate Gate

Spectacular Ornate Gate

Oh my gosh!  This gate is nothing short of unbelievable!

I'm not certain if this gate is wrought iron but since I love the wrought iron look here are some wrought iron facts:

There are wrought iron gates in Westminster Abbey that date back to the 13th century

The last English ironworks closed in 1974

The Eiffel Tower is made from puddle iron, a form of wrought iron

Before they were made from steel, horseshoes, nails, rivets, wire, nuts and bolts were made of wrought iron

Free Vintage Clip Art - Victorian Homes

Victorian Homes

A Victorian home in the UK refers to a home built during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).  The Industrial Revolution saw a housing boom during this time period and these homes are still prominent in most British towns and cities.

These homes follow many styles including classic, Italian, gothic, Queen Anne Style and arts and crafts styles.  By the 1850's the more ornate, Italian style home was by far the most popular style with its use of stucco.  The next wave of popular style came with the gothic revival that featured pointed steeples, projecting porches, bay windows and grey slate.

Here are some examples of Victorian homes
