Free Vintage Clip Art - The Clauss Scissors Girl Trade Card

Clauss Scissors Girl Trade Card

Fremont, Ohio - The Cutlery Capital of the World

The Clauss brothers, along with five employees, began making straightedge razors, serrated knives and scissors from a one room building in Elyria, Ohio.  In 1877 the brothers moved their operation to Fremont, Ohio to be near a recently discovered supply of natural gas.  Within one year they were producing 3,000 pairs of shears and scissors a day!

In 1919 Clauss Scissors merged with the Henkle Company, also from Ohio, to become the Henkle-Clauss Company and now had over a 1,000 employees and the largest payroll in the United States at the time.  In the early 1920's Fremont, Ohio had 25 cutlery businesses and became known as the cutlery capital of the world.

A good pair of scissors is a must for anyone who sews, quilts, embroiders and just crafters in general so I can definitely relate to the look on this lovely lady's face at the sheer pleasure of owning a decent pair of scissors.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Spring Tulips

Spring Tulips

Yes spring is finally here!  Yea!  I am seeing beautiful flowers and trees blooming everywhere.  So many beautiful colors and I have really missed color over these last few months.

One of the first bloomers is the tulip and tulips are not just red any more.  They come in every color you can think of.  Most of us think of the Netherlands when we think of tulips.  The Netherlands produce up to 3 million tulip bulbs a year but the tulip actually originated in the Ottoman Empire - Turkey!  I had no idea.

The word tulip actually derived from a Persian word that meant turban.  It is believed that the first tulips grown in the United States was in and around Salem, Massachusetts in the mid 1800's.

Here are some lovely examples of tulips:

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Easter Eggs

Vintage Easter Eggs

The egg is a pagan symbol of rebirth and was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ.

The House of Faberge made thousands of jeweled eggs from 1885 to 1917.  The majority of these eggs were miniatures that could be worn around the neck.  The most famous Faberge eggs were commissioned by Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia.  Of the 50 eggs commissioned 42 have survived.  These eggs were made from heavy metal or stone and decorated with enamel and gemstones.  These eggs are regarded as masterpieces of jewelers art.

Well I don't have anything as grand as a Faberge egg to offer you but here are a couple of images of vintage eggs.

I love this image because I myself used to climb up a tree very much like this one and sit and ponder the world.  Tree climbing was such a challenge and joy.  This image also reminds me of the Dick and Jane series.

I hope you enjoy too!

Free Vintage Clip Art - Woman with Wreath and a Toast to YouTube

Woman with Wreath

I love this almost black and white image probably because of the snowy background.  I have seen this a lot in ads on television and in movies where everything is black and white except for the piece of it that will be in color.

Over the weekend I managed to pick up 55 viruses on my computer!  I never do anything halfway so this is really no surprise!  Some of them were pretty serious but they haven't done any damage as far as I know.

But here's the thing:  I spent hours trying to find a solution.  How do I get rid of these?  I have Norton Anti Virus software running all of the time and I kept running Norton scans but Norton said everything was fine!  Finally it was YouTube that provided the answer.  I have grown very fond of YouTube.  I heard that if you ran all of the videos that are on YouTube right now it would take over 18 years to run them all!  Now that's impressive.

I have used YouTube in the past to learn how to do things, mostly crafty types of things.  If you've ever wondered how something is made YouTube will have the answer.
So to all of you out there (certainly not any of my readers I'm sure) who like to put malicious viruses in or on seemingly innocent files:  why don't you use those brains and talents of yours in a more productive way?  Just a thought.

So here is a gent who will make a toast with me to YouTube, who had the answer for me in the middle of the night and helped me solve my problem!

Thank you YouTube!
