Free Vintage Clip Art - Betsy Ross and Vintage Patriotic Girl Sewing Flag

Betsy Ross

Betsy Ross was born Elizabeth Griscom in 1752 in Philadelphia to Quaker parents.  While working as an upholsterer's apprentice at age 21 Betsy eloped with fellow apprentice John Ross, who was not a Quaker, resulting in her expulsion from the Quaker church.

Betsy and her husband soon started their own upholstery shop and joined Christ Church where they sat next to George Washington.  Two years later the Revolutionary War broke out and while John Ross was guarding munitions he was killed by an explosion.  In 1777, Betsy married her second husband, a seaman, who was captured by the British and died in a British prison.  Betsy had two daughters with her second husband, one of which died in infancy.

In 1783 Betsy married John Claypoole and had five daughters with him.  Betsy continued to run their upholstery business for ten years after Claypoole's death.  She retired three years before her death, completely blind.  That must have been horrible for a woman who earned her living working with her hands her entire life.

When I came across this image I immediately thought of a young Betsy Ross

I was taught in elementary school that Betsy Ross had been commissioned by George Washington to make our country's first flag but while doing my research for this post I discovered that historians now dispute that story.  Historians agree that at most Betsy Ross was one of many women who worked on our first flag and that her only contribution to the flag's actual design was when she changed the six pointed stars to five pointed stars.

On January 1, 1952, the US Post Office issued a Betsy Ross stamp to commemorate her 200th birthday.

Happy Birthday America!

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Uncle Sam

Vintage Uncle Sam

This poster is from 1917 encouraging citizens to grow more of their own food to help the war effort of WWI

When I came across this poster of Uncle Sam, I thought to myself that I can't remember seeing him depicted in this way.  We are used to seeing Uncle Sam like this

And it got me to thinking about the origins of Uncle Sam.  Here is what I discovered:

Uncle Sam was conceived during the War of 1812 and was depicted as an elderly man with white hair and a goatee dressed in elements of the US Flag.  The female version of Uncle Sam, known as Columbia, has seldom been seen since the 1920's.

The recruitment poster shown above was created by James Montgomery Flagg (how appropriate!) and released on July 6, 1916.  More than four million copies of this poster were printed between 1917 and 1918 and was used extensively during WWII.

Uncle Sam was actually born out of a real person named Samuel Wilson, who was a wealthy middle aged meat packer who had obtained a contract with the US government to supply the troops in the north with meat during the War of 1812.  The meat was shipped in barrels which were owned by the US government and marked "U.S.".  The Teamsters who moved the barrels used to joke about the initials and referred to them as "Uncle Sam".

The US Congress passed a resolution on September 15, 1961 which said:

Resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives that the Congress salutes Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy, New York, as the progenitor of America's National symbol of Uncle Sam.

Happy Birthday America!

Free Vintage Clip Art - Independence Day Emblem

During the American Revolution the original Thirteen Colonies voted to legally separate from Great Britain on July 2nd, 1776 and the Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4th, 1776.

In a stunning coincidence the only two original signers of the Declaration of Independence that went on to serve as President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, died on the same day, July 4th, 1826.   Two other presidents, James Monroe and Calvin Coolidge, also died on July 4th.

Below is a wonderful, ornate patriotic emblem

Free Vintage Clip Art - The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge over the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean.  Completed in 1937 it was the world's longest suspension bridge and remains the second longest suspension bridge in the United States and was declared one of the modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Many experts didn't think a 6700 foot long bridge could be built across the bay, which is 500 feet deep at its center.  San Francisco Bay has always been known for its strong, swirling currents and strong winds and the experts at the time vicous winds and blinding fogs would prevent not only construction but operation of the bridge as well.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Family Record Certificate

Vintage Boston Birth and Marriage Record

Record keeping of births, deaths, marriages and divorces, vital statistics as we call them today, was not a consistent practice in America and has developed into a common practice slowly over time.

In colonial America many local communities tried to keep these records but they were often not complete.  I know my own grandfather was born in rural Indiana around the turn of the last century and he did not have a birth certificate so no one really knew the year of his birth.

By the mid-1800's a few large cities on the east coast were recording birth and death records but those records were usually incomplete.  Many counties in the east and midwest were recording births and deaths by the late 1800's.  Most states began enacting laws about recording birth and death records in the early 1900's and within 20 years of these laws about 90% of the births and deaths were being recorded.

It was also common practice for families to keep their own records, often inside the family bible.  The certificate below is an example of a family birth and death certificate, probably from the early 1900's from Boston.

We are about to enter the sign of Cancer representing those born between June 21st and July 22nd.  Cancer is a water sign and ruled by the Moon.  Cancer is considered a feminine sign and is compatible with the other water signs:  Scorpio and Pisces.
People born under this sign are all about the home and family.  The sign of Cancer is the crab which is appropriate as they often hide in their shell and are considered moody people.  Cancers are fiercely protective of their loved ones and their nurturing personalities make them a pleasure to be around.

Just a note to all of you who sent messages to my post about my friend Willy:

Thank you all so much!

I felt compelled to make that post for a couple of reasons not because I wanted sympathy for myself, I don't deserve any.  I have always resorted to writing out my feelings to help myself work out painful experiences and this was one of those times.  The other reason I was compelled was the sad, sad story and to bring awareness to animal cruelty and suffering.

We share this world with other creatures and as a society we have decided that animal cruelty should not be tolerated.  What happened to Willy was a wake up call to me:  there just might be a creature in your life that needs your help.

So thanks to all of you who "got it".

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage War Food Administration Poster

Vintage War Food Administration Poster circa 1944

When America became involved in World War I the US Congress created the US Food Administration with the objective of regulating the consumption of certain foods in the US therefore freeing up more food that could be sent to supply the troops in Europe.

Each state was required to:
Conserve food during the war
Facilitate the transportation of food to prevent monopolies and hoarding
Maintain governmental power over food be creating a licensing system

The US Food Administration was led by Herbert Hoover (yes, that Herbert Hoover) and he launched a massive propaganda campaign through posters.  President Herbert Hoover signaled his support of the US Food Administration by bringing in sheep to graze on the lawn of the Whitehouse.

The War Food Administration, as it came to be known, was terminated on June 29, 1945 by President Harry Truman.

Free Vintage Clip Art - New York Restaurant by Edward Hopper

Oil Painting by Edward Hopper (1922)

American artist Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York in 1822.  His birthplace and boyhood home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is the Edward Hopper House Art Center, a non profit community cultural center featuring exhibits, workshops, lectures, performances and special events.  Hopper's main theme's were American urban life and its inhabitants and seascapes.

Hopper has had an undeniable influence in American culture.  His House by the Railroad is said to have influenced the house in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and the home in Days of Heaven.  Hopper's most famous work Nighthawk, depicting customers sitting at the counter of an all night diner, was the inspiration for those posters we have all seen of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean sitting at the counter of a 1950's diner and have been recreated in the 1998 episode of That 70's Show, as well as countless album covers and movies.

Other Hopper paintings have also influenced many movies such as Blade Runner, Road to Perdition, The End of Violence and Deep Red.  You can also animated clips of Hopper's work between movies on cable's Turner Classic Movies.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Mockingbird

Vintage Northern Mockingbird

The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, TexasThey eat mostly insects during the summer and switch to fruit in the fall and winter.  They love maple, sycamore and sweetgum trees.  You will find them perched high in a tree, telephone pole, street lights or on high buildings.

The Northern Mockingbird is known for imitating the sounds of other birds as well as the sounds of other animals and mechanical sounds.  They are also some of the most vocal of birds and often sing during the night and when the moon is full and they sing year round except for late summer when they are molting.

In a 2009 study people were placed around the nest of a mocking bird.  Then certain people were asked to touch the nest.  Later, the mockingbirds recognized those that touched the nest and attacked them, while ignoring the other people.  Amazing!

The edible fruit has about 600 seeds.  Fruitless varieties are grown for their flowers alone in ornamental gardens.  Pomegranate juice contains vitamin C and B5, potassium, tannins and flavonoids.  In 2010 there were 23 registered clinical trials with the National Institutes of Health to study the health benefits of pomegranate juice.
