Vintage Charles Carter Poster

Charles Carter was born in San Fransisco in 1874 and was known as Carter the Great.
Carter began as a journalist and lawyer but always had an interest in magic. Because there were so many magic acts already in the US Carter took his magic act to Europe, where he achieved his fame.
His act included an elebrate version of sawing a woman in half, making an elephant disappear and what he called "cheating the gallows" where he would disappear just as he about to hit the bottom of a hangman's noose.
His home in San Francisco is now used as a foreign consulate.
