Vintage War Food Administration Poster circa 1944
When America became involved in World War I the US Congress created the US Food Administration with the objective of regulating the consumption of certain foods in the US therefore freeing up more food that could be sent to supply the troops in Europe.
Each state was required to:
Conserve food during the war
Facilitate the transportation of food to prevent monopolies and hoarding
Maintain governmental power over food be creating a licensing system
The US Food Administration was led by Herbert Hoover (yes, that Herbert Hoover) and he launched a massive propaganda campaign through posters. President Herbert Hoover signaled his support of the US Food Administration by bringing in sheep to graze on the lawn of the Whitehouse.
The War Food Administration, as it came to be known, was terminated on June 29, 1945 by President Harry Truman.
