Vintage Northern Mockingbird
The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas. They eat mostly insects during the summer and switch to fruit in the fall and winter. They love maple, sycamore and sweetgum trees. You will find them perched high in a tree, telephone pole, street lights or on high buildings.
The Northern Mockingbird is known for imitating the sounds of other birds as well as the sounds of other animals and mechanical sounds. They are also some of the most vocal of birds and often sing during the night and when the moon is full and they sing year round except for late summer when they are molting.
In a 2009 study people were placed around the nest of a mocking bird. Then certain people were asked to touch the nest. Later, the mockingbirds recognized those that touched the nest and attacked them, while ignoring the other people. Amazing!
