In 1797 a book was published in England titled The Young Man's Valentine Writer which contained romantic and sentimental verses for those who were unable to come up with their own. With the recent reduction in the postal rates publishers began mass producing little cards with verses like those in The Young Man's Valentine Writer and these first Valentines began flying through the mail.
Paper Valentines became so popular by the early 19th century that they started to be assembled in factories. Valentines were often embellished with real lace and ribbon. Paper lace replaced real lace by the mid 19th century.
The US Greeting Card Association estimates that 190 million Valentines are mailed in the United States every year!
