Vintage Birds

I have some lovely birds for you today

This first one is an Asian inspired peacock and it really reminds me of the American calligraphy birds.  This vintage design might have been used to decorate fabric, tiles, ceramics or metalwork.

This is a drawing of a Northern Oriole or Baltimore Oriole and it is the state bird of Maryland.  It was named after Lord Baltimore because its colors matched those of Lord Baltimore's coat of arms.

The two birds in the foreground are males with the female sitting in the back.  They migrate in flocks from the northeastern part of America to as far south as South America although some orioles do stay near feeders.  Their nests are tightly woven pouches located on the end of branches.  Their diet consists mainly of insect but they are often found at hummingbird feeders.

Calligraphy Unicorn

The ancients were convinced of the existence of the unicorn.  There were no unicorns in Greek mythology instead the unicorn was talked about in natural history because scholars, historians, writers, poets and physicians were convinced of its reality and that belief lasted until the 19th century.
It was believed that the unicorn's mythical horn has magical powers.

Unicorns began to be used in heraldy in the 15th century and best known as the royal coat of arms of Scotland and the United Kingdom.

I hope you enjoy this lovely calligraphy unicorn

This style of drawing is referred to as "Spencerian Drawing" and was actually used as an exercise to practice calligraphy, the decorative art of handwriting.  These little drawings were a way for the student to practice makng their p's and q's.
The most well known calligraphy instructor was Platt Rogers Spencer and we now know his method of teaching the art of calligraphy as Spencerian drawing.

I hope you enjoy these images and can find a way to use them !
