Vintage Roses - Damask Rose Printable

This first rose is the Damask Rose also known as the Rose of Castile.  It is a rose hybrid and is commercially grown for its oil for use in perfumery and rose water.  The petals are also used to flavor food or to make tea.  There are two varieties of the Damask Rose - the Summer Damasks and the Autumn Damasks.  The Summer Damasks have a shorten blooming season and the Autumn Damask blooms into the fall.

Crusader Robert de Brie apparently brought the Damask Rose to Europe from Syria sometime between 1254 and 1276 and it was named after the city of Damascus, Syria.  

There has been a perfume industry in Kabul Province, Afghanistan using the Damask Rose and an attempt has recently been made to revive this industry to encourage the local farmers to grow the Damask Rose instead of opium.

This next flower is the Laurier Rose, which is an evergreen shrub or tree, every part of which is highly toxic.  Its a part of the Oleander family.  Oleander is one of the most toxic and commonly grown plants.  Three deaths were reported from this plant between the years 1985 and 2005.

Vintage Hydrangea and Dogwood Frames

Oh, these frames are so beautiful!  

I can see these frames being used as mats inside of a picture frame or even as photocards.  Just cut out the center rectangle and insert your favorite photo.  Use your watercolor pens or chalk sticks to add a little color to the petals for a little blush of color.  You could also use these frames as invitations or announcements by reducing their size and entering text inside the frames.

This dogwood frame is quite large at 7 X 9.5 inches.

Using your watercolor pens or chalk sticks to add soft and subtle color and you could make some of the blooms pink and others that wonderful periwinkle blue color.

Vintage Fuchsias

I so love fuchsias and I always have hanging baskets of them.  My favorite variety are the giant ones with the red caps and the deep purple flowers underneath.  So beautiful!

There are 110 varieties of fuchsias and they are native to South America.  One species is native to the very southern most part of South America in the cool, temperate zone, which would explain why they do so well here in the Pacific Northwest.  The vast majority of fuchsias found in nurseries are descendants of just a few varieties.

Vintage Sunflowers

Sunflowers are native to the Americas and their images are often used to depict the sun.  Sunflowers were brought to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century and sunflower oil began to be used in cooking along with the seeds.  The leaves of the sunflower can be used to feed cattle and their stems contain a fiber used in the production of paper.  What a useful plant!

Vintage Zinnia Seed Packets

Oh my gosh!  I had forgotten how beautiful zinnias are!

Zinnias are native to Mexico but also to the entire American Southwest to South America.  The various varieties of zinnias include a single row of petals to a dome shape, such as the ones on these seed packets, and in a range of colors from white, yellow, orange, red, purple, chartreuse and lilac.  Zinnias reseed themselves every year.  

Zinnias love full sun and are a very popular garden flower.  Many gardeners purposely plant zinnias because butterflies LOVE them.

Madonna Lily Printable

The white lily, also called the Madonna Lily, is native to the Balkans and  West Asia.  The White Lily has long been thought to be the basis for the fleur de lis.  The Madonna Lily is the symbol for purity for Roman Catholics and medieval paintings of the Virgin Mary often show her holding these flowers.  King Solomon's Temple have depictions of the Madonna Lily on the columns.

Pretty Vintage Blue Flowers

I guess I'm more excited by the arrival of spring than I thought because I have more flowers for you - and of the blue variety!  Love those blue flowers.

These pretty little flowers are called harebells, commonly known as bluebells.  They are native to northern Europe and North America.

And this pretty little flower is the hyacinth and come from bulbs.  Hyacinths are the first sign of spring here in the Pacific Northwest.  They come in beautiful and rich pastel colors.  Native to the eastern Mediterranean region from Turkey to northern Israel.  Their bulbs are poisonous so gloves should be worn during the planting process.

Vintage Bachelor's Button Seed Packets

Bachelor's Button, also known as cornflowers, were often worn by young men in love and was the favorite flower of John F. Kennedy.  In fact, John F. Kennedy, Jr. wore one at his wedding in honor of his father.

Bachelor's button used to grow wild in the crop fields in the United Kingdom but are now endangered mostly because of the over use of herbicides.  Fifty years ago there were 268 sites where they grew wild and that number has dwindled down to just three sites.  The conservation charity, Plantlife, has named it as one of the 101 plant species it will work on to bring "back from the brink".

Because the cornflower was introduced to the rest of the world in seed form it thrives in gardens all over the world.  Thank goodness, because it is such a lovely little flower!

Bachelor's button are very easy to grow and come in a gorgeous blue color as well.  It flowers from June until August.

Bachelor's Button is edible and often used to add color to salads.  It is also an ingredient in Twinings Lady Grey blend tea.

Vintage Peonies

I love peonies.   Every time I see them I think of my grandmothers.  I planted some peony bulbs a few years ago and now I'm getting these huge pink flowers.  They are so big and heavy with blossoms they end up bowed over in the grass.  They are truly spectacular and are fast becoming my favorite flower to grow.  Yesterday I purchased some white and deep, deep pink bulbs to go with the light pink ones.  I know I won't have flowers for a couple of years but I assure you they are worth the wait.

There are at least 25 varities of peonies and they are native to Asia, southern Europe and the western United States.  The plant ranges from 1.5 to 5 feet tall although some varieties can from 5 to 10 feet high.  If you want to add stunning blooms to your garden try peonies, you will have blooms beyond your expectations.
