Vintage Roller Skates

A Belgian inventor patented the first roller skate in 1760.  It was not very popular and the invention did not take off.  In 1863 a Massachusetts inventor named George Plimpton invented the rocking skate which allowed for going around corners.  Roller skating evolved into a competitive sport called roller hockey.

Roller skating has become so popular there is even a roller skating museum in Lincoln, Nebraska and claims to have the largest collection of vintage roller skates in the world.

You know spring is officially here when you hear the crack of the bat.  Hello spring!

Here is a Spalding Official League baseball in the original packaging.  I wonder how much this baseball would be worth today?

Vintage George Washington Snake Game Board

Vintage games today

This is such a sweet image!  Wouldn't it be wonderful if all children played so nicely and sweetly?  Just precious.  If you look at the game board closely it says, "Harmony".  And take a look at that gorgeous mirror in the background.

This is a rare board game circa 1840 to 1860 called the George Washington Snake Game.  It's a hand-colored wood engraving showing a game board with red, gold, and blue spaces, numbered between 1 and 122.  On the board are illustrations that are numbered and correspond to the blue starred spaces, which are action spots, the player landing on one follows the instructions given with the corresponding illustration, and moves accordingly. At the beginning of the game is a portrait of George Washington and at the end, a rustic looking homestead identified as the "home of the Washington family".

What a treasure!

Demand for antique rocking horses and rocking chair horses is so great that chips to the mane and ears is essentially overlooked.  Other things to look for:

The mane and tail should be real horsehair

The paint should be original and even if showing signs of wear the original paint is preferred by collectors

The saddle, stirrups and harness should be original

Antique rocking horses and rocking chair horses usually only become available through auction houses and demand and fairly good price.

Enjoy!

Free Vintage Clip Art - Saturday Fun - Vintage Toys

Saturday has always been my favorite day of the week.  The entire weekend lies ahead and possibilities abound.   Will it be a day to relax or will it be a busy day filled with chores and errands?

As a child Saturdays began with cartoons and then great old movies on our black and white TV set.  Boy does that date me or what?  And if the weather permitted it was outside to play with my dog Bingo, or to make mud pies, ride my bicycle or to play in the woods across the street.

Yes, before VCR's, video games and cable TV kids actually went outside to play!  Or we played with our toys and used our imaginations to create our own fun.  We got exercise naturally by riding our bicycles, running through the woods and just playing all day.

So in celebration of Saturdays from a time gone by here are some vintage toys for you.

Enjoy!
