Casablanca is one of my all time favorite movies. At the time of the making of the movie no one associated with the film expected it to be anything but an ordinary film despite it's A-list stars and first rate writing team. It was a solid hit at the time of it's release in 1942, cost $964,000 to make and earned $3,700,000 in its first release and marked Humphrey Bogart's first role as a romantic leading man.
Casablanca was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three - Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Its dialog, music and characters have become iconic. Phrases like "We'll always have Paris" and "Here's looking at you kid" are still used today. In 2007 the American Film Institute ranked Casablanca third on its 100 best movies of all time.
Interesting note:
The Motion Picture Production Code at the time forbade showing a woman leaving her husband for another man so it would have been impossible to have any other ending to the movie at the time.
