In honor of the Academy Awards ceremony tomorrow night I'm posting a couple of vintage movie posters this weekend. Today's post is an original King Kong movie poster with Faye Wray.
The original King Kong was released in 1933. The giant prehistoric ape was named Kong and lived on Skull Island. He's captured by an American film crew and taken to New York city to be exhibited as the eighth wonder of the world.
The 1933 version was a marvel of special effects and animatronics. The character of King Kong has become a movie icon and has been featured in comic books, books, cartoons, video games and theme park rides.
Produced by David O. Selznick the film cost $675,000 to make and earned $1,700,000 in its original release. Selznick wanted the special effects team to be nominated for a special award but the Academy turned him down because no such award existed at the time and wouldn't until 1938. In 1975 the American Film Institute named King Kong one of the 50 best American films of all time and in the 1991 the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. In 1998 the American Film Institute ranked it as #43 of the greatest 100 movies of all time.
