Known for their large, trumpet shaped flowers, hibiscus are often used as landscape shrubs. Some species are used in paper making, as well as herb teas and jams.
Hibiscus is consumed all over the world, both hot and cold. Dried hibiscus can be eaten and is considered a delicacy in certain places. A red hibiscus flower tucked behind the ear of a Taihitian woman indicated for availability for marriage.
A USDA study conducted in 2008 showed that drinking 3 cups of hibiscus tea daily lowered systolic blood pressure by more than 8 points.
