When I first heard the term penny farthing I thought I knew what it was - a British coin. But a penny farthing is actually a term used to describe a kind of bicycle with a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel and thy were the first bicycles! The term does come from the British coins - a farthing and a penny coin - one much bigger than the other.
Thomas Stevens became the first cyclist to cross the United States in 1884 on a penny farthing when he rode one from San Francisco to Boston.
The penny farthing is also a symbol of the cities Davis, California and Redmond, Washington, where Microsoft is located.
