I love seeing a man in a hat and these are two great examples.

The bowler hat was created in 1849 for the British soldier and politician Edward Coke. The bowler hat is a hard felt hat with a rounded crown and became popular among working class in the Victorian era. It also became part of a banker's uniform.

The top hat, also known as a topper, worn by men from the middle of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. It is typically used as a symbol in cartoons and communist media.

Movie Costume Designer Edith Head

Here is a gorgeous Patricia Ellis in a wedding gown designed by the genius of movie costume design, Edith Head for the 1934 movie Here Comes the Groom. Love that veil.

Edith Head was the Head Designer at Paramount Studios from 1938 until 1967. She also worked for MGM, Universal, Warners, Columbia and Fox studios. Edith Head won 8 Academy Awards, more than any other woman and was nominated 35 times. She worked with virtually every star who was a star. Some actresses didn't like working with her because of her understated style.

Her last Academy Award was for the movie, The Sting, in 1974. Here is one of her sketches of a costume worn by Paul Newman in that movie.

When I came across this poster of Uncle Sam, I thought to myself that I can't remember seeing him depicted in this way. We are used to seeing Uncle Sam like this

And it got me to thinking about the origins of Uncle Sam. Here is what I discovered:

Uncle Sam was conceived during the War of 1812 and was depicted as an elderly man with white hair and a goatee dressed in elements of the US Flag. The female version of Uncle Sam, known as Columbia, has seldom been seen since the 1920's.

The recruitment poster shown above was created by James Montgomery Flagg (how appropriate!) and released on July 6, 1916. More than four million copies of this poster were printed between 1917 and 1918 and was used extensively during WWII.

Uncle Sam was actually born out of a real person named Samuel Wilson, who was a wealthy middle aged meat packer who had obtained a contract with the US government to supply the troops in the north with meat during the War of 1812. The meat was shipped in barrels which were owned by the US government and marked "U.S.". The Teamsters who moved the barrels used to joke about the initials and referred to them as "Uncle Sam".

The US Congress passed a resolution on September 15, 1961 which said:

Resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives that the Congress salutes Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy, New York, as the progenitor of America's National symbol of Uncle Sam.

The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton will take place one week from today and in honor of that I have a Prince William paper doll for you. I will also be posting a paper doll of Kate Middleton in the next few days.

The Queen of England gave her formal consent to the marriage yesterday. The Royal Marriage Act of 1772 requires all descendants of King George II to obtain the consent of either the king or the queen before they marry.

Under the Great Seal of the Realm the queen signed the proclamation giving her permission of the marriage of:

Our most dearly beloved grandson Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, K.G. and our trusty and well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.

The Royal Marriages Act of 1772 was enacted by England's Parliament and describes the conditions under which members of the British Royal family can marry to safeguard against undesirable marriages that might affect the succession to the throne or lower the status of the Royal House.

Wow!

Vintage English Woolen Mills Company Ads

England, Scotland and Wales are well known for their wool products. The mills were located in the country close to where the wool was sheared from the sheep to turn into wool.

I discovered wool a few years ago as a crafter. What a wonderful medium to work with! I can often be found in thrift stores buying up old wool coats, skirts and jackets. I bring them home and get out my seam ripper and take the garments apart, removing the buttons, zippers and linings. Now I have pieces of 100% wool that cost me much less than going to the fabric store! I prefer to buy only 100% wool and usually purchase only white or cream colored wool pieces so I can dye them any color I want.

Once the garments are taken apart I throw them in the washer, using hot water and laundry soap, to felt them. Now the fun begins! I recently discovered using Kool Aid to dye my wool! Yes, Kool Aid and a microwave! I guess using Kool Aid as a dye has been around for awhile and is a wonderful, non-toxic and inexpensive alternative to fabric dyes. Of course, you can only dye small amounts of wool this way but that's fine with me. Play around with color intensity and mixing the different "flavors" for different color combinations.

So stop by a thrift store, buy a wool garment, bring it home and felt it and then get out your Kool Aid and have some fun!

I love this almost black and white image probably because of the snowy background. I have seen this a lot in ads on television and in movies where everything is black and white except for the piece of it that will be in color.

Over the weekend I managed to pick up 55 viruses on my computer! I never do anything halfway so this is really no surprise! Some of them were pretty serious but they haven't done any damage as far as I know.

But here's the thing: I spent hours trying to find a solution. How do I get rid of these? I have Norton Anti Virus software running all of the time and I kept running Norton scans but Norton said everything was fine! Finally it was YouTube that provided the answer. I have grown very fond of YouTube. I heard that if you ran all of the videos that are on YouTube right now it would take over 18 years to run them all! Now that's impressive.

I have used YouTube in the past to learn how to do things, mostly crafty types of things. If you've ever wondered how something is made YouTube will have the answer.

So to all of you out there (certainly not any of my readers I'm sure) who like to put malicious viruses in or on seemingly innocent files: why don't you use those brains and talents of yours in a more productive way? Just a thought.

So here is a gent who will make a toast with me to YouTube, who had the answer for me in the middle of the night and helped me solve my problem!

Beautiful Vintage Couple Vignettes

Today is beautiful couple day!

Was there really ever a time when people actually dressed like this? Where women looked feminine and the men looked dapper? When people actually dressed appropriately for the occasion and took pride in their appearance?

I think it had a lot to do with respect - respect for themselves and respect for others. Shame is also a big part of it, I think. There is no shame any more. There doesn't appear to be any shame for our actions. In fact, it seems to me, and there is example after example of this, the worst kind of person you are and worst kind of behavior you engage in, the more you are rewarded in our society! There used to be a clear right and wrong and if you did wrong society would shun you.

Today there seems to be a competition on bad behavior. Because you have to be more outrageous to get attention. What a shame. I for one would love to see the return of both respect and shame!

When I look at these images I am reminded that there was a time when we actually respected ourselves and one another. The appearance we present to the world says volumes about what we think of ourselves as well as others.

Anyway, you can look at these images and be taken back to a time when proper actually meant something!
