Pretty Vintage Red Currant and Floral Border Frame
The red currant is a member of the gooseberry family native to western Europe. With high levels of vitamin C and fiber the translucent berries are considered to have fever reducing, laxative, diuretic and digestive properties. Tea made from dried red currant leaves is said to relieve the symptoms of gout and rheumatism and compresses of the leaves are said to heal slow healing wounds.
Red currants are rich in vitamins B1 and C as well as iron, phosphorous, potassium, fiber, copper and manganese.
In Germany juice from the red currant is added to soda water in a refreshing drink called Johannisbeerenschorle, so named because the red currant ripens there on Johannistag or June 24, the commemoration of the birth of John the Baptist. Germans also use it as a filing for tarts.
In Scandinavia it is used in fruit soups and summer puddings.
In the United Kingdom red currant jelly is a traditional condiment served with lamb.
And unlike cranberries, red currants can be eaten in its fresh state without sugar.
