Vintage Silk Stocking Label
It was actually men who wore the first silk stockings, of course only very rich men could afford such a luxury. Men wore silk stockings with garters up until the end of the 18th century.
At the end of WWI women began to wear long silk stockings when short skirts became popular. When Dupont Nylon began to be used to make stockings n the late 1930's the use of silk stockings was replaced after WWII by nylon.
A pair of Christian Dior silk stockings worn by Marilyn Monroe sold for $649 in June 2005!
