The first vegetable garden at the White House was planted by President John Adams and First Lady Abigail Adams. President Thomas Jefferson added fruit trees and flowers to the garden while he was in the White House and this inspired Americans to grow their own gardens in their yards.
In World War I President Woodrow Wilson brought in sheep to graze and fertilize the White House lawns; in World War II President Franklin Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt planted a Victory Garden that also started a movement that spread across the country. That victory garden movement was such a success that Americans were growing 40% of all vegetables in their own yards during that time.
On March 20, 2009 President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama started their garden at the White White. Their garden is 1,100 square feet and is located by the tennis courts. Their garden produces 55 varieties of fruits and vegetables and are incorporated into meals for their family as well as invited guests. A portion of everything grown at this garden is donated to a local soup kitchen and to the Food Bank Organization.
