Did you Know?

Bugs Bunny made his debut on this date in 1938 in Porky Pig's Hare Hunt.  Supposedly Bugs' loud carrot chewing was based on Clark Gable's loud carrot chewing in the movie It Happened One Night in 1934.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom

Vintage Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom
Today I am bringing you the official Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom!  Of course, in honor of the Royal Wedding.

These arms are used by the Queen in her official capacity as monarch of the United Kingdom.

This coat of arms was adopted in 1837.  It features a crowned golden lion standing on a royal crown.  The shield is divided into quarters representing:  England, Scotland, Ireland with England being represented twice. A golden lion and a silver unicorn hold the shield.

The motto is written in French:  Dieu et mn droit  Literally meaning:  God and my right.

This coat of arms is used on all acts of Parliment, UK passports and on the backs of sterling pound coins.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Kate Middleton Paper Doll

Kate Middleton Paper Doll

Well the Royal Wedding is just hours away now!  Will you be watching?  Or will you record the event to watch later?
I will probably be doing both.  As a night owl I will probably be up anyway.  But why do I care?  Because it's like a fairy tale, with all of the pomp and circumstance and because it will be beautiful!  With all of the constant bad news of the world for a short while we can watch a live fairy tale come true.

I remember watching the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana and I hope that Kate's dress is prettier than that horrid poofy dress that Diana wore! I think it will be.

Anyway, here are some Kate Middleton facts:
She was born on January 9, 1982

Both of her parents were at one flight attendants for British Airways
Her parents are self-made millionaires.  They created a children's mail order party business.

Because Kate is a commoner, meaning that she does not come from a royal or aristocratic background she will not have a title of her own.  The title that will be given to her depends on whether or not Prince William decides to take the title of Duke upon marriage.  A prince who marries usually becomes a duke.  If William takes the title of duke then Kate will be a duchess.  If William turns down the dukedom Kate will take William's first name and her title will be Her Royal Highness Princess William of Wales!

Wow, what a surprise!  I just assumed she would become a princess in own right.
So here she the Kate Middleton paper doll

Free Vintage Clip Art - Spectacular Ornate Gate

Spectacular Ornate Gate

Oh my gosh!  This gate is nothing short of unbelievable!

I'm not certain if this gate is wrought iron but since I love the wrought iron look here are some wrought iron facts:

There are wrought iron gates in Westminster Abbey that date back to the 13th century

The last English ironworks closed in 1974

The Eiffel Tower is made from puddle iron, a form of wrought iron

Before they were made from steel, horseshoes, nails, rivets, wire, nuts and bolts were made of wrought iron

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Song Sheet

Vintage Song Sheet

Alice, Where Art Thou Going?
By Albert Gumble (1883-1946)

This song actually made it into the Boy Scout Songbook!

Here are the first line of lyrics:

Alice, where art thou going?
Upstairs to take a bath.
Alice, with legs like toothpicks,
And a neck like a giraffe.
Alice stepped in the bathtub,
And pulled out the plug,
Oh my Goodness, Oh my Soul,
Alice, where art thou going?
Glub, glub, glub.

Here is the song sheet

Free Vintage Clip Art - The Corset Controversy

The Corset Controversy

Vintage Corset Trade Cards

European women began wearing corsets in the 1500's.  In the 1790's there was a break in this tradition that coincided with the French Revolution when the styles changed to Empire waistlines.  In the 1820's the styles changed again and the waist became the focal point of fashion and the corset resumed its dominant role in women's fashion.  Doctors and much of the media deplored the undergarment.

The Corset Controversy was a series of letters and articles that appeared in newspapers and magazines in the 19th century.  The controversy raged for decades.  Women wrote to varies media in the United States and Europe complaining about the requirement that they wear them.  Laura Ingalls Wilder even wrote about the issue in her book Little Town on the Prairie.

Fashions again changed in the early 1900's and that was the beginning of the end of the corset and the misery of women everywhere!

Here are a couple of corset trade cards

Free Vintage Clip Art - Prince William Paper Doll

Prince William Paper Doll

The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton will take place one week from today and in honor of that I have a Prince William paper doll for you.  I will also be posting a paper doll of Kate Middleton in the next few days.

The Queen of England gave her formal consent to the marriage yesterday.  The Royal Marriage Act of 1772 requires all descendants of King George II to obtain the consent of either the king or the queen before they marry.

Under the Great Seal of the Realm the queen signed the proclamation giving her permission of the marriage of:

Our most dearly beloved grandson Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, K.G. and our trusty and well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.

The Royal Marriages Act of 1772 was enacted by England's Parliament and describes the conditions under which members of the British Royal family can marry to safeguard against undesirable marriages that might affect the succession to the throne or lower the status of the Royal House.

Wow!

Anyway, for the rest of us commoners here is the Prince William paper doll

Pakistan army accuses US of ‘negative propaganda’

Chief Geneal Ashfaq Kayani

Pakistan’s army chief General Ashfaq Kayani vowed to defeat terrorism and rejected the notion of Islamabad “not doing enough” in the anti-Taliban fight, the military said on Thursday.

His comments followed remarks by Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, accusing Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency of having ties with Afghan Taliban in Pakistan’s northwest tribal belt.

The White House also criticised Pakistan’s efforts to defeat the Taliban operating on the border in a report this month refuted by Islamabad.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage English Woolen Mills Company Ads

Vintage English Woolen Mills Company Ads

England, Scotland and Wales are well known for their wool products.  The mills were located in the country close to where the wool was sheared from the sheep to turn into wool.

I discovered wool a few years ago as a crafter.  What a wonderful medium to work with!  I can often be found in thrift stores buying up old wool coats, skirts and jackets.  I bring them home and get out my seam ripper and take the garments apart, removing the buttons, zippers and linings.  Now I have pieces of 100% wool that cost me much less than going to the fabric store!  I prefer to buy only 100% wool and usually purchase only white or cream colored wool pieces so I can dye them any color I want.

Once the garments are taken apart I throw them in the washer, using hot water and laundry soap, to felt them.  Now the fun begins!  I recently discovered using Kool Aid to dye my wool!  Yes, Kool Aid and a microwave!  I guess using Kool Aid as a dye has been around for awhile and is a wonderful, non-toxic and inexpensive alternative to fabric dyes.  Of course, you can only dye small amounts of wool this way but that's fine with me.  Play around with color intensity and mixing the different "flavors" for different color combinations.

Here are some English Woolen Mills Ads

So stop by a thrift store, buy a wool garment, bring it home and felt it and then get out your Kool Aid and have some fun!

The campaign to raise money for the tsunami pets has been extended to May 11th and therefore I will leave the donation box up until then or whenever they stop collecting for the pets left behind either by the earthquake, the tsunami or families forced to evacuate their homes because of the radiation levels and were forced to leave their precious pets behind - heartbreaking indeed.
